3 Steps of Excellence – Objectives, Process and Performance
“Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not any simpler” - Albert Einstein
Have you ever really thought about what excellence means?
Excellence represents a commitment to completion and can be reduced to 3 factors or steps:
- The degree of your intent for excellence.
- Your level of organisation.
- The efficient use of your time to complete priorities.
This translates to the 3 core factors of Fully Integrated Internet Marketing (FIIM):
- Crystal clarity of what we want to achieve, what kind of business model will suit us best.
- Optimum preparation and organization of how we are going to do number 1.
- Efficient implementation of numbers 1 and 2.
So FIIM is divided into three Modules, one for each of those factors:
- Objectives: Planning outcomes for clarity of purpose
- Process: Setting up your infrastructure for managing constraints through gradual and constant improvement.
- Performance: Project and time management for right-action and results.
Of course these areas interrelate so these are not linear steps but the aspects of a combined upwards spiral process.
As part of Module 1 we will develop the necessary clarity of product and marketing yet inject into organizing (module 2) and implementation (module 3).
Here in Module 1 we need to understand those 3 keys, and then in Modules 2 and 3 we will structure them and action them.
Excellence Key 1: Clarity and Objectives
“The most depraved type of human being … (is) the man without a purpose. – Ayn Rand
We start with purpose because without purpose, there is nothing.
At first glance the purpose might seem obvious.
To make money. To expand our market. To get bought out by Google. To change the world. To fulfill customer focussed value-driven sales target using relationship marketing through a strong USP, loyalty positioning and on-brand advertising…
Ok so perhaps purpose is not quite so straight forward after all…
In fact, consultants are regularly brought in to major corporations to help clarify ‘purpose’.
Freelance copywriters and smaller scale consultants like myself also begin with our clients from a ‘conceptual agreement’. That is, a clear outline of objective, measures of results, and ultimate value for the client of the proposed project.
Purpose evolves with the growth of the business. Still wherever the netrepreneur or business currently is, it has a purpose to get to the next level. Having an up to date and clear purpose provides a frame around which to base strategy. A clear target gives direction.
To develop clarity of purpose, develop the habit of asking yourself and answering clarification questions such as:
Why am I doing this? What does this mini-project or activity serve? How can I create an order of priority for mini-projects? What is the grand ideal final outcome? What milestones are there? What are the likely consequences of not doing a particular activity? What do I really want out of this?
Excellence Key 2: Structure and Process
“If you can’t describe what you’re doing as a process, you don’t know what you’re doing.” – W E Deming
Here is the process you will learn in Module 2:
The structure and process that we use must crush all constraints that stand in our way. A constraint is anything that limits your progress. Quickly get a corporate level understanding of strategy and tactics and constraints management.
Constraints for cyber-cash fit under three categories:
- Resources
- Time
- Ability
Resources
- What do you have already for accomplishing the project in question?
- What do you need? (software, hardware, how-to information, etc)
- What budget do you have?
SIM6 helps solve this by giving you the information needed to control success quickly and cost effectively.
Time
Time is the ultimate commodity. That is to say, you can’t be all things to all people, you can’t do everything. But you can do enough, and outsource the rest.
- Is there a well defined deadline for the project?
- How much time do you have for getting it done?
- How much time will each part of the project realistically take?
SIM6 helps solve this by giving you a complete online marketing time management system in module 3.
Ability
With good tools and enough time, what limits us is our own ability to make the most of our time by efficiently and effectively using the tools.
SIM6 gives you the strategies to grow the needed abilities quickly.
Excellence Key 3: Action and Performance
Once we get to Module 3, you will have the time management system specially tailored for online marketers, and it will be clean sailing from there.
Well done for completing the somewhat ‘dry’ material of Module 1. We can now head towards the promontory, the jumping off point, into structure and process via Module 2.
