Personal Entry: Being Productive | Vectors of your Mind

by NathanShaw on December 7, 2009

So what’s the point in all this mind control anywho…?

I’m going to publish a short report demonstrating visually the hierarchy of mind controllers that I believe provide the steps of the art of neuroplasticity.

I’ll leave the science of neuroplasticity to the neuroscientists. But alone, those guys and gals would just potter around and tinker about with what can really be achieved here.

Success. Happiness. Producitivity.

And here’s something I have recognised in my own life:

From early in childhood I was abundantly curious.  More so than any of my friends, ever.  And that led me on so many paths of interest that I developed a lot of ‘horizontal’ knowledge (wide spread in many areas), but not really all that much vertical knowledge (indepth in a focussed area).

And I realise that has created a bad habit in my brain.  Easily distracted. Easily bored. Always searching.

The effect: I don’t FINISH enough projects to full satisfaction.

The solution: I believe building horizontal knowledge is absolutely key to long-term success.  So I’m still hanging out for a happy ending :)   But I also now believe I should have developed the talent (discipline, commitment, whatever) of drilling deep into one or two particular topics and becoming masterful at completing projects in those few areas, fleshing out the detail of anything within that topics direct vacinity.

So my recommendation:  Develop 2 vectors of your mind.  The horizontal vector of broad scope knowledge in many many areas.  The arts. Science. Business. Marketing. Influence. Sales. Relationships. Listening. Nature. Health. Etc. And also develop your minds vertical vector, by finding one or two prime topics and drilling deep with all your capacity into mastering those areas.

Like you, Curiosity has been my primary characteristic. And, yes, it has also been the bane of my existence; in that I don’t retain curiosity about any subject long enough to drill deeply into ‘expertise’. My feeling is that any subject, for instance being a biblical scholar, always began to feel seductive and I felt trapped as the boundaries of that field began to gel and then harden. So, I have reworked my idea of ‘success’ and my successes are now the Holistic/Integral application of all the information I have studied. Good work on the site.
