Michael Moore's new film – Capitalism: A Love Story

I was just asked:

What are your views on this?

Michael Moore's highly-anticipated documentary "Capitalism: A Love Story" opens September 23 in New York and Los Angeles and nationwide October 2, and Huffington Post has an exclusive clip. The film looks into the root causes of the worldwide financial meltdown.

Hi G_____,

My view is essentially two-fold:

  1. I agree that this is essentially what has been going on, most of Moore's stuff is probably correct.
  2. But what is being exposed is not capitalism, it is corporatism which is more socialist than capitalist.

America was founded as a Republic (a good thing). America is said to be a capitalist democracy (a bad thing), but it is not a democracy, that is bulshit. As that short video clip shows, America is controlled by corporatists. And capitalism and corporatism are not the same thing.

We need to distinguish between the capitalist philosophy of creating and accruing values over a period of time through voluntary exchange (a good thing), and the corporatist version that is in operation today (i.e. government facilitated political capitalism), which is far more communist/socialist than it is capitalist.

(Where capitalism equates to laissez-faire capitalism, as per free-market Austrian economists such as FA Hayek, Ludwig Mises, Milton Friedman, Ayn Rand).

What Michael Moore is exposing should be labelled as 'corporatism'. But the great tragedy is that he is a leftist, and as such has his own deeply dishonest agenda of labelling what is happening as 'capitalist' or 'capitalism'…
