Truth, Gnosis and Context
On dishonesty, irrationality, mysticism, cognitive dissonance, rationalization, religion, pragmatism, general semantics, epistemology, and the like.
This may be the most curious subject on my site.
What is Truth?
What is Knowledge?
What is Context?
And what is revealed by the line of thinkers, writers and teachers that have led to man’s current situation?
First, consider the difference between truth and honesty:
Here’s a great description of the difference between truth and honesty:
“Enotes gives a great summation of the difference in its page on Honesty:
“In discourse a statement can be strictly true and still be dishonest if the intention of the statement is to deceive its audience. Similarly, a falsehood can be spoken honestly if the speaker actually believes it to be true, assuming the speaker doesn’t unfairly reject or suppress evidence.”
So, while Truth has a universal or objective sense to its usage, Honesty is much more subjective and depends upon the integrity and intention of the speaker. In this sense, Truth is a debatable topic, something that philosophers, religious leaders and others argue and discuss in order to arrive at a common understanding. Yet, again, Honesty is not debatable, but relies strictly upon the intention of the individual.”

Modern Day Rationalists
Ayn Rand did more than anyone else to clarify the Objectivist (‘realist’) based view of Epistemology (the subject of how we know what we know).
But was she right?
Just as Hermes taught us that all truths are but half truths, I consider myself a contextualist.
Yes, you can be flexible in your approach to epistemology. You can consider that ‘everything is energy’ and all of that kind of fluffy vibrational lingo.
But in my book, you can only do that once you have passed through the narrow tunnel of Objectivism and popped out of the other end.
Because only then (in my humble opinion) can you really appreciate the dichotomy between the Aristotelian (reality as primary) perspective vs the Platonistic (mind-created reality) perspective.
Read The Kybalion by Three Initiates, read William James little book called Pragmatism, and also read Ayn Rand’s Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology.
